R2AK Weather – Start Prediction

R2ak race start weather. So Environment Canada is predicting W15 increasing to W15-25 for Thursday. That’s a ways off yet but NOAA’s Grib file above seems to agree. The light yellow area in the eastern Juan De Fuca indicates 15-18 knots of NW. Looks like a wet uphill slog to Victoria, but maybe not much[.....]

R2AK Weather update – pre race

More weather….as of Sunday May 31st, with about 4 days till the start in Port Townsend. The strong westerlies have broken down over the outside coast and in Hecate Strait. Winds are light over most of the coast right now, from the Grib file below you can see the strongest wind (Bright yellow spot) (according[.....]

R2ak race weather for the morning of May 29th 2015. This is a pre-start overview. With six days or so till the start, it’s time to look seriously at R2ak weather. It was chaos for most of the day, but by late afternoon the boat was loaded and the dock was empty. Of course the wind was slowly dying all day. Around 15:30 they got away, headed to Vancouver for some minor sail work (fourth reef). I think they got some practice with the new 12′[.....]

Fraser, A Gillnetter

I believe the Fraser was originally the Fraser Belle, built in 1959 by Masao Kamachi at Kamachi Boat Works at Queensborough. Masao owned the boat until 1961 so may have fished her those first few years. Her Official Number is 311271, registered at New Westminster. Gross tons 12.0, dimensions – 32’ x 10.3’ x 4.8’.[.....]

Troller Early Spring For Sale

The double-ender Early Spring was built in Sointula, by Edwin Peterson, in 1941. Gross tonnage is 10.63, she’s 37’10” long overall, beam is 9’8″, draft is 5’6″, and displacement 17tons. Power is a 3-71 GM with a Borg-Warner gear and she is Cedar planked on Yew frames. Son James changed some planks under water and[.....]
