Small Boat Stability
Before we start looking at specific stability issues and possible regulatory problems, it’s important to get the basics understood. Above is a basic diagram showing three stability cases. The “Stable Condition” where G is below M and there is a positive GZ. Gravity is pushing down through G, the Buoyancy force is pushing up through[.....]
LEVIATHAN II and STABILITY ISSUES
Leviathan II was built in 1981 as the CZ-72-112, a fast aluminum crewboat, her name changed at some point to Crown Forest 72-112, and she was rebuilt in 1996 to become the Leviathan. Registered length is 64.5′, beam 15’1″, and depth 5’3″ (this is not draft but depth of hull, deck to keel). 32.58 gross[.....]
IDAHO – A Lee & Brinton Halibut Schooner
A couple of beautiful prints sent to me by John Rawlings. This is the Lee & Brinton design for Idaho, launched by Nilson & Kelez in Seattle in 1912. Idaho was 78’4″ x 19’5″ x 9’3″ and 76 gross tons. In the drawing the engine appears to be a three cylinder, and John reports original[.....]
Boats Should Look Like Boats
Concept of the day…..department of How Come? Why oh why can we not have heavy displacement cruisers that look like boats? The two boats shown here have almost the same accommodation, despite my sketch (above) being only 44′ x 14′ compared to the Nordhavn (below), at 55′ x 18′. Both have a separate pilothouse with[.....]

Edwin Monk Sr. and Lorne Garden
From the late 1940’s into the 1950’s, Edwin Monk Sr. and Lorne Garden were partners in the firm of Edwin Monk Naval Architects. Lorne was the older brother of better known Seattle/Victoria designer William Garden. Very little is said about Lorne in the available printed references. Ed Monk Jr. recalls visiting the office as a[.....]
Berry Point 26 Launched and Running
I’m very pleased with the little movie of the Berry Point running along. Her owner builder was the instigator in the creation of this design starting in 2006 on the Wooden Boat Forum. Perfect Powerboat Thread from WoodenBoat Forum
Pacific Proa cruiser
There was an interesting minimal cruiser in the cove last night. A so called “Pacific” or “Flying” Proa, which carry the outrigger to windward. Main hull appeared to be skin on frame, about 28′-30′ long, beam might be 12′-16′. She had no trouble in sailing all over in this crowed bay, leaving the cove under[.....]
Fire in the Bay
We had a fire in the Bay today. These pictures show how important the first few minutes are. In the first couple of photos the fire is just getting going, been smoking for about 10 minutes, then caught and flared up. Don Mayrand and crew from the shipyard arrived about 15-20 minutes in. Their scow[.....]
